Damn, today was cool.  Lucia and I went to see an Arequipenian fair, with a bull fight included.  Two bulls fight each other, because they are male and they want to win.  It was fuckin' cool.  They fight for a short time until one of them runs away.  It's pretty exciting when one runs, because it runs to one of the four corners of the arena.  If you are like me, then you're are standing at one of those four corners and are in for a nice adrenaline rush, with a little sprinting action thrown in.

After the fights, we went to Lucia's cousin in law's pisco stand at the fair.  Omar, her cousin, owns the company La Hacienda del Abuelo, and he is an expert salesman.  His stand was open later than all the others, and we left only when security said it was time.  After the fair, we went to omar's wife, maria's house, for Lucia's uncles birthday.  We drank the best quality pisco until we couldn't walk much anymore.  It was a great day of new adventures.

In the fourth picture I was scared shitless, because the last time I tried to get this picture, the bull turned it's horns on me within about two feet from my face.  Of course, I jumped and ran behind the gate.  I don't know how close it looks in the picture, but in real life, if that bull turned its head towards me, its head would touch me.  It was pretty cool, since the owners let me go behind the gate to get this picture.  I wish I could have gotten some shots of this bull in action, but by the time it was his turn to fight, my camera battery had gone dead.  I actually bet 5 soles on this bull, but the fight was a draw between him and his competitor, so no money was exchanged.

The fifth picture, is my favorite of the day.  The chacareros are watching the next fighting bull as it approaches over the hill, during sunset.

The second to last picture is me an Omar, Lucia's cousin in law, at his pisco stand, at the fair.

The last picture is Omar, and Maria, his wife, at her house, after the fair.

Old House by the River Print

About a week and a half ago, I was exploring new area's of Arequipa while Lucia was at her internship. I found this very old house by the river in ruins. Half of the house looked to be about 200-300 years old, while the addition to the house looked only 70-100 years old. The house was huge; an old hacienda by the river with lots of acreage around it, which apparently, due to the bright green color of the alfalfa, were still being farmed. As I walked through the ruins, it was obvious that in it's current condition, the house had been used as a weekend party place for unscrupulous teenagers, drug users, and the like, as are nearly all semi-discovered ruins.

It was fun imagining how the house would have looked in it's prime, and all the stories that would have occurred in it's presence. The girls of the family being married off to men they didn't love, or perhaps sneaking out of the house at night into the courtyard or farmland, to fornicate with the men they did love. This Hacienda could have been filled with the dramas of Latin life in colonial Peru, or perhaps, filled with the severities of a rich, foreign, land owner, living his dream, only to have it collapse on him over time and his family forgotten. Either way, the house was filled with my imagination, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Thank you god, South Padre, Best Kiteboarding, and Jeff! Whooo hoooo!!!!!!

Today was one of the best sessions I’ve ever had, and certainly the best I’ve had in South Padre so far! The waves were more than triple overhead, and pushing quad overhead on the outside. What an awesome day! Got to fly an 11m Best Waroo Pro, a SurfTech JC 6′4″ surfboard, the new Spleen surfboard thing with straps, and that one super concave Ocean Rodeo board. Unfortunately, in the end, I broke everything except me and the board. My kite is shredded, every one of my lines broke, and the end of my bar broke off too! Wait, wait, my harness is still working too. It was all worth it though!

Yeeee haawwwww!
